Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones joined the NSW Police Force in 1984 working at Liverpool Police Station. Most of his early service was general duties and criminal investigation duties at various police stations before moving into Major Crime. He worked as an Undercover Branch Operative and as a Detective at the Drug Squad, Armed Hold-Up Squad, Homicide Squad and Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones was a Staff Officer to Deputy Commissioners Terry Collins and Nick Kaldas and was a Police Negotiator, trained to counter terrorism level. He became Commander of the Undercover Branch where he worked closely with the AFP, ASIO and FBI, having led covert overseas operations for the FBI. In 2012, he was promoted to Commander at Burwood LAC.
Mr Jones was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner in 2017 and appointed Commander of the North West Metropolitan Region.
Assistant Commissioner Jones is the recipient of various awards including the National Medal with 1st Clasp and the NSW Police Medal with 4th Clasp and National Police Service Medal. He was awarded the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service in the 2007 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
On 31 October 2013, he was awarded the Commissioner’s Safety Award for the best solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue in respect of his outstanding commitment and dedication to Operation Quest for the Big Day Out. Further to this, Assistant Commissioner Jones has received a Deputy Commissioner’s Certificate of Recognition for his contribution to operational undercover policing in NSW.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones has a Master of Arts in Terrorism Safety and Security from Charles Sturt University and has undertaken numerous specialist training courses both nationally and abroad in serious crime, investigations, undercover and counterterrorism. He also has a Diploma of Personnel Management and Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management.
Assistant Commissioner Jones is the NSW Police Corporate Spokesperson for Domestic and Family Violence, working closely with the NSW Police Force Domestic and Family Violence Team and across Government and Non-Government agencies. Assistant Commissioner Jones is committed to developing and achieving strategies that respond to family violence, provide comprehensive services and reduce the rates of family violence. Mr Jones also sits on the Domestic and Family Violence Delivery Board.
Assistant Commissioner Jones is the Project Sponsor for the NSW Police Mobile Police Program (MobiPol), a business transformational program which promotes an adaptive and responsive workforce and transition away from the police station to maximise time in the field. MobiPol has delivered real-time and secure access to information in the field and facilitates the ability to capture and transmit secure multi-media data from the field. To date, MobiPol has deployed 2610 devices being used by frontline officers across the state.
